Energy Resources
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Sediment | Small pieces of rock, sand, or silt that settles to the bottom of oceans, lakes, streams, or ponds |
| Sedimentary Rock | Layers of rock formed when sediment is deposited and then compacted and cemented over time |
| Compaction | The squashing of the grains of sediment together more tightly by the weight of overlying layers. |
| Cementation | When grains of sediment are stuck together |
| Metamorphic Rock | Rocks that are formed as a result of intense heat and/or pressure within the Earth’s crust. |
| Igneous Rock | Rocks formed from molten rock called magma that has cooled over time |
| Fossil | The preserved remains of dead plants and animals in sedimentary rock. |
| Oil | A flammable material, without definite form, produced from the remains of marine organisms under layers of sediment found near oil deposits. |
| Fossil fuel | Any naturally occurring fuel, such as coal, petroleum, peat, and natural gas, formed by the decomposition of prehistoric organisms |
| Coal | A solid fossil fuel that is formed from the concentrated remains of plants over very long periods of time. |
| Oil (Petroleum) | A flammable liquid produced from the remains of marine organisms buried under layers of sediment over millions of years |
| Peat moss | A brown, soil-like material characteristic of boggy, acid ground, consisting of partly decomposed vegetable matter. |
| Renewable resource | Any natural resource that can replenish itself naturally over time. |
| Non-renewable resources | Any natural resource from the Earth that exists in limited supply and cannot be replaced if it is used up. |
| Replenish | To restore (a stock or supply of something) to the former level or condition. |
| Pressure | Force of objects pushing on other objects. |
| Organic matter | The waste and remains of living organisms. |
| Alternative energy | Energy generated in ways that do not deplete natural resources or harm the environment, especially by avoiding the use of fossil fuels and nuclear power. |
| Biofuels | A fuel derived directly from living matter. |
| Geothermal energy | Thermal energy generated and stored in the Earth. |
| Hydroelectric energy | A form of energy generated by the conversion of free-falling water to electricity |
| Solar energy | Energy from the sun used to produce heat and /or electricity. |
| Solar panel | A device designed to absorb the sun's rays as a source of energy for generating electricity or heating. |
| Wind energy | Energy generated by moving air masses used to generate electricity or produce mechanical energy |
| Turbine | a machine for producing continuous power in which a wheel or rotor is made to revolve by a fast-moving flow of water, steam, gas, air, or other fluid. |
| Formation | The action of forming or process of being formed. |
| Petriefied | To convert into stone or a stony substance. |
| Convert | Cause to change in form, character, or function. |
| Alternative | One of two or more available possibilities or options |
