rocks and rock cycle

TermDefinition
Mineral naturally occurring, inorganic solid having a definite crystalline structure and unique chemical composition
Crystal repeating pattern of a mineral having flat sides that meet in sharp edges and corners
Luster the way a mineral reflects light from its surface
Hardness the ability of a mineral to resist being scratched
Streak the color of the powder scraped off of a mineral when rubbed against a rough, hard surface
Density the amount of matter in a given volume
Cleavage when a mineral splits into smooth, definite surfaces
Fracture when a mineral breaks along rough or jagged surfaces
Ores minerals or combinations of minerals from which metals and nonmetals are extracted
Metals elements that are shiny, conduct heat and electricity, can be stretched into wires and bent into different shapes
Nonmetals elements with dull surfaces, are poor conductors of heat and electricity, are not able to be stretched into wires or bent into different shapes
Gemstones minerals that are rare, hard, beautiful and durable that are often cut for jewelry
Rocks hard substances composed of two or more minerals
Igneous Rock rock formed from hot, fluid magma or lava, "born of fire"
Sedimentary Rock rocks formed when particles of rocks (sediments) are carried and deposited by wind and water
Sediments small particles of rock
Metamorphic Rock rocks formed when chemical changes, heat or pressure, change a rock, "changed rocks"
Rock Cycle the continuous changing of rocks from one form to another over long periods of time
Extrusive Rock igneous rocks formed from lava on the outside of the Earth
Intrusive Rock igneous rocks formed from magma within the Earth
Calstic Rock sedimentary rock formed from the fragments of preexisting rock
Conglomerate rock containing rounded pebbles that is held together by clay or mud
Organic Rock rock formed from once living organisms
Chemical Sedimentary Rock rocks formed when seas or lakes dry up

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
