Chapter 3
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Atom | tiny building blocks of mater made up of protons, neutrons and electrons |
| element | a substance that contains only one type of atom |
| compound | matter that is made up of 2 or more elements |
| organic compound | compound that always contains hydrogen and carbon; associated with living things |
| inorganic compound | made of elements other than carbon; associated with non living things |
| enzymes | type of protein that regulates nearly all chemical reactions in cells |
| passive transport | movement of substances through a cell membrane without the use of cellular energy |
| diffusion | a type of passive transport in cells in which molecules move from an area where there are more to areas where there are fewer of them |
| equilibrium | occurs when molecules of one substance are spread evenly through out another substance |
| osmosis | type of transport that occurs when water diffuses through a cell membrane |
| active transport | energy requiring process in which transport proteins bind with particles and move them through a cell membrane |
| exocytosis | process by which vesicles release their contents outside the cell |
| endocytosis | the process by which cells take in a substance surrounding it with the cell membrane |
| metabolism | total of all chemical reactions in an organism |
| photosynthesis | food making process by which plants and many other producers use light energy to produce glucose and oxygen from carbon dioxide |
| respiration | a series of chemical reactions used to release energy stored in food molecules |
