Axis An imaginary line that extends through both poles of a planet
Star Huge ball of superheated gas
Galaxy A huge system of gases, dust, and stars
Solar System A group of objects that orbit a star in the center, and that star
Planet A large object that orbits a star
What does a star's color tell us about the star? How hot it is
You turn a model of Earth around its axis. What does this explain? Why earth has day and night
Why do the positions of the stars seem to change as seasons change? As Earth orbits the sun, we see different parts of space different times of the year.
What causes the sun to appear to rise and set in the sky? The rotation of Earth on its axis
What large object floats in space above Earth to take pictures of stars and planets? A satellite
What is an instrument a person can use to see stars? A telescope
What would you call a group of stars known as Ursa Major? A constellation
How can you describe the inner planets? They are solid, warmer, only have 0, 1, or 2 moons
How can you describe the outer planets? They are made mostly of gases, colder, have many mons
What does a planet orbit? A star
Describe Earth's ROTATION. Takes one day to rotate, or spin, on its axis
Describe Earth's REVOLUTION. Takes one year to revolve, or orbit, around the sun
Why does the moon seem to have different shapes or phases? The moon revolves around Earth and we only see the part that is lit by the sun.
List the planets in order from the sun. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
Why does Earth have seasons? As Earth revolves around the sun, different parts of Earth are tilted towards the sun.
What season is it when the northern hemisphere is tilted toward the sun? Summer
What season is it when the northern hemisphere is tilted away from the sun? Winter
How do the seasons affect the way we see the sun? The daily path of the sun appears to change because Earth's axis is tilted.
