| Coal | black and rough |
| Conglomerate | comes into pieces easily |
| Siltstone | gray |
| Sandstone | very sandy |
| Shale | made of plant and animal fossils |
| Granite | black speckles |
| Obsidian | Black and shiny |
| Rhyolite | white |
| Basalt | Carl(salt)'s cousin |
| Gabbro | dark gray |
| Pumice | very light to hold |
| Quartzite | named after Quartz |
| Schist | the c in its name is silent |
| Slate | feels very smooth and has dark gray as its color |
| Anthracite | looks like coal-don't get confused |
| Gneiss | sounds like nice |
| Marble | lots of things are made of this material |
