Science Systematic study of the natural world
Empirical Evidence observations, measurements, and other types of data that people gather and test to support scientific explanations
Pseudoscience belief or practice that is based on incorrectly applied scientific methods
Theory Explains many related observations and is supported by a large body of evidence acquired through investigation
Experiment An organized procedure to study something under controlled conditions
Observation Obtaining information using the 5 senses
Hypothesis testable idea or explanation that leads to a scientific investigation
Variable a factor that changes in an experiment in order to test the hypothesis
Independent Variable The factor that is changed or manipulated in an experiment
Dependent Variable The result of the change in a scientific investigation due to the independent variable
Data Information gathered by observation or observation that can be used in calculating or reasoning
Control The part of the experiment in which the independent variable has not been changed. Used to Compare
Measurement A description that includes a number and a unit (42 meters)
Quantitative Information that is expressed by a number or quantity
Qualitative Information that concerns quality or kind
Scientific Notation expressing the quantity as a number multiplied by 10 to the appropriate power
Accuracy How close a measurement is to the true value of the quantity measured
Precision The exactness of a measurement
technology The application of science for practical purposes: the use of tools, machines, and processes to meet human needs
engineering The application of science and mathematics to solve real-life problems
prototype A test model of a product
