What does the 1st cranial nerve control? smell--sensory (olfactory nerve)
What does the 2nd cranial nerve control? sight--sensory (optic nerve)
What does the 3rd cranial nerve control? eye movement upward and outward, pupil constriction/dilation--motor (oculomotor nerve)
What does the 4th cranial nerve control? eye movement downward and inward--motor (trochlear nerve)
What does the 5th cranial nerve control? senses pain, temperature, touch to face, chewing--motor & sensory (trigeminal nerve)
What does the 6th cranial nerve control? lateral gaze--motor (Abducens)
What does the 7th cranial nerve control? facial muscle movement, anterior 2/3 of tongue, taste, palate movement--motor & sensory (Facial nerve)
What does the 8th cranial nerve control? hearing and balance--sensory (Vestibulocochlear nerve)
What does the 9th cranial nerve control? swallowing, posterior tongue, movement of pharynx and larynx--motor & sensory (Glossopharyngeal nerve)
What does the 10th cranial nerve control? Parasympathetic input from the next, thorax, and abdomen; some pharynx and larynx control--motor & sensory (Vagus nerve)
What does the 11th cranial nerve control? Sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscle movement [shoulder movement], some pharynx and larynx movement--motor (Spinal accessory nerve)
What does the 12th cranial nerve control? tongue movement--motor (Hypoglossal nerve)
Where do the 3nd-4th cranial nerves originate? Midbrain
Where do the 5th-8th cranial nerves originate? Pons
Where do the 9th-12th cranial nerves originate? Medulla
Where do the 1st and 2nd cranial nerves originate? cerebral cortex
