| predicting | making a forecast of what will happen based on what has happened in the past |
| scientific inquiry | many ways in which scientists study the natural world and propose explanations based on gathered evidence |
| hypothesis | a testable possible explanation for a set of observations to a scientific question |
| variable | a factor in an experiment that can change |
| dtata | facts, figures, and other evidence gathered through observations |
| conclusion | a decision about how to interpret what you learn in an experiment. |
| scientific theory | well-tested scientific concept that explains a wide range of observations |
| scientific law | an observed pattern in nature based on repetitive results |
| matter | what makes up everything in the universe |
| energy | the ability to do work or cause change |
| earth science | the study of earth systems, history, and earth in the solar system |
| geology | study of the solid earth |
| oceanography | study of the Earth's oceans |
| meteorology | study of the Earth's atmosphere |
| astronomy | study of the universe beyond Earth |
| environmental science | study of the Earth's environment and resources |

| elevation | height above sea level |
