Angiosperms seed plants with flowers and fruit
Annual A plant that survives only one year and then dies
Anther tip of the stamen where pollen is produced
Auxin A hormone that causes plant cells to elongate
Biennial A plant that survives two years and then dies
Chlorophyll the pigment molecule in the chloroplast that absorbs sunlight for photosynthesis
Chloroplast Organelle in the cells of plants where photosythesis takes place
Cone the part of the gymnosperm that provides a home for the seeds
Cuticle the protective waxy layer on the outside of a plant that prevents water loss
Deciduous Plant a plant that loses its leaves at once in the fall
Dicot the group of angiosperms that have two parts to their seeds
Dormant A resting stage some seeds go through while waiting for the correct conditions to grow
Filament Part of the stamen that holds the anther up.
Flower the reproductive part of a palnt
Frond the leaf of a fern
Fruit the ripened ovary of a plant that houses the seeds
Germination The process of a seed beginning to grow
Gymnosperms seed plants with cones and no flowers
Leaves the photosynthetic structures that provide food for the plant
Monocot the group of angiospemrs that have one part to their seeds
Nectar A food source for insects that attracts them for the purpose of pollinating the other flowers
Ovary swollen base of the pistil that produces the eggs
Ovules structures holding eggs that become the seeds when fertilization takes place
Perennial a plant that survives many years before dying
Petals colorful part of the flower that attracts insects and birds to pollinate the flower
Petiole the part of the leaf that connects it to the tree
Phloem Vascular tissue that carries food made in the leaves to other parts of the plant
Pistil Female part of the flower
Pollen The structure produced in the flower that contains the sperm
Pollination Process where pollen moves from the stamen to the pistil of the flower
Root The structure that absorbs water and provides an anchor for the plant
Seed Dispersal The process by which plants spread out their seeds to new areas
Sepals part of the flower that protects it before it blooms
Shoot The above ground part of the plant including leaves stem flowers and fruit
Stamen Male part of the flower
Stem the part of the plant that provides it with structure to stand upright
Stigma Sticky part of the pistil that collects the pollen
Stoma opening in the cuticle of a leaf that allows gases in and out of the plant
Style The part of the pistil that connects the stigma to the ovary
Tropism a pattern of growth in plants
Vascular tissue tubes or vessels in plants used for transportation
Xylem vascular tissue that carries water and minerals
