vocabulary for our environment unit
| Term | Definition |

| renewable resources | resources that can be replaced or renewed during a short period of time if used wisely |
| nonrenewable resources | resources that are limited in supply and cannot be replaced once they are used |
| pesticide | a substance intended for preventing and killing pests such as insects or rats |
| ecosystem | the specific place where living and nonliving things interact |
| pollutant | any waste matter that contaminates the air, water or soil |
| recycle | taking something old and making it into something new |
| conservation | the act of using a resource wisely |
| habitat | the place where an organism lives |
| EPA | Environmental Protection Agency which makes and enforces laws to help protect the environment |
| DDT | a dangerous pesticide no longer used in the United States |
| Fossil Fuel | a nonrenewable resource formed from the remains of organisms that lived long ago |
| agriculture | farming |
| landfill | a place for solid waste disposal |
| endangered species | animals with very small numbers that might no longer exist in the near future |
