ES 09.2 Groundwater
| Term | Definition |

| Groundwater | Water held underground in the soil or in pores and crevices in rock. |
| Porosity | The amount of pore spaces. |
| Water Table | The upper boundary. |
| Zone of Aeration | Air in pores above. |
| Permeability | The ability of a material to let water pass. |
| Aquifers | Permeable sediments with large pores such a sand and gravel. |
| Aquicludes | Barriers to groundwater flow such as silt, shale and clay. |
| Springs | Any natural place where water flows from an aquifer to the earth's surface. |
| Hot Springs | Greater than 31 degrees celsius found near igneoug activity and deep aquifers. |
| Geyser | Explosive hot spring |
| Carbonic Acid | A very weak acid formed in solution when carbon dioxide dissolves in water. |
| Calcite | A white or colorless mineral consisting of calcium carbonate such as limestone, marble, and chalk. |
| Stalactites | a tapering structure hanging like an icicle from the roof of a cave, formed of calcium salts deposited by dripping water. |
| Hard Water | Has high amounts of Ca, Mg, Fe; can clog pipes. |
| Well | A hole in the ground to reach an aquifer. |
| Ordinary Well | Reacher below water table, level recharged by precipitation. |
| Artesian Well | Drilled into aquifer under pressure, water spurts up like a fountain. |
| Threats to Water Supply | Overuse, pollution, chemicals, salt, and radon. |
| Cone of Depression | Formed by overpumping. |
| Recharge | The restocking of an aquifer. |
