Ground Water

TermDefinition
Permeable Rocks Rocks that allow water to percolate freely through them.
Impermeable Rocks Rocks that are made of particles so tightly packed that water can not pass through them.
Water Table The upper level of the saturated ground water zone. It does not remain at a constant level.
Water Table Rises After heavy rain falls.
Water Table Falls During a heavy drought.
Spring Any natural flow of water from the ground. Springs are held up by impermeable rock ledges.
Artesian Well A well where water is naturally pushed from the ground by surface pressure. Popular in dry areas where there is little rain.
Oasis A small area of water found in the desert when the water table lies close to the surface.
Karst Regions that have distinctive surface features which are the result of the interaction of water and limestone.
Limestone A rock composed largely of calcium carbonate that dissolves in acid. Ground water, a very weak acid dissolves limestone. As the water seeps down into the limestone, it dissolves more soluble materials. This increases the permeability of the rock.
Swallow Hole/Sinkhole Holes that link caverns to the surface.
Doline Steep sided depression formed when swallow holes on the surface collapse.
Stalagmite A build up of calcium carbonate on the floor of a cavern.
Stalactite A build up of calcium carbonate on the roof of a cavern.
Column/Pillar When a stalagmite and a stalactite connect.
Polje An extensive depression with a flat floor and steep walls. Formed by the coalescence of several sinkholes. Serbo-Croation word for field.
Terra Rossa A type of red clay like soil produced my the weathering of limestone. Good soil for vineyards.
Disappearing and Reappearing Streams Streams that meet a sinkhole and go down into a cavern and reappear in a polje or a red clay valley.
