QuestionAnswer
Continental Drift Theory by Alfred Wegener
Pangea Means "all lands"
Glossopters fern like fossils
Lithosphere layer of rigid or hard rock
Asthenosphere Layer of soft rock
Plate Tectonics Theory by J Tuzo Wilson
Subduction When one plate dives under another
Rift Valley Deep valley that forms when two plates move apart on land
Deep Sea Trench Deep valley in the ocean where the crust sinks towards the mantle
Mid- Ocean Ridge Under sea mountain made by a divergent boundary
What are the 4 layers of earth Mantle, outer core, Inner core, crust
Why is the inner core of the earth different than the outer core? the outer core is made up of liquid, and the inner core is solid and is made up of iron.
What is the difference between the Asthenosphere and lithosphere Asthenosphere has a layer of soft rock, and the lithosphere has a layer of hard rock.
What is a transform boundary? it happens when two plates slide next to each other.
What is a convergent boundary? it happens when two plates push into each other. Sometimes the two boundaries with keep pushing and create a mountain.
What is a divergent boundary? this happens when two plates move in the opposite direction of each other.
Why was the theory of plate tectonics accepted and the theory of continental drift rejected? it was excepted because they had evidence to support it. continental drift was rejected because they had no evidence.
When one plate dives underneath another plate and is recycled in the mantle is called_________. Subduction
when new crust is made on the ocean floor due to a divergent boundary this is called________. Sea floor spreading
J Tuzo Wilson used information from two other theories to help form his theory of Plate Tectonics. What were these two theories? 1. Continental drift 2. sea floor spreading
What is oceanic crust, and what is it made of? it makes up the ocean floor and is made of basalt.
What is continental crust, and what is it made of? it makes up the continents and is made of granite.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
