| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| albedo | the fraction of total radiation that is reflected back by a surface |
| autumnal equinox | the start of autumn in the northern hemisphere |
| conduction | Transfer of heat through matter by molecular activity |
| convection | Transfer of heat by mass movement or circulation within a substance. |
| greenhouse effect | where radiatiojn is trapped in the troposphere and is heating the earth |
| heat | the energy that is transfered from an object to another because of a difference in temperature |
| isotherm | lines on a map that connect points that have the same temperature. |
| mesosphere | the layer of the atmosphere immediately above the stratosphere and characterized by decreasing temperatures with height. |
| ozone | a form of oxygen that combines three oxygen atoms into each molecule 03 |
| radiation | Tranfer of heat through wavelengths. Can travel in a vacuum. |
| reflection | when an electromagnetic wave bounces off an object |
| scattering | light redirected by small particles |
| spring equinox | first day of spring |
| stratosphere | from 12 km to 50 km. It has a constant but rising temperature |
| summer solstice | June 21 or 22 in the Northern Hemisphere and Dec. 21 or 22 in the Southern Hemisphere |
| temperature | a measure of the average kinetic energyy of individual atoms or molecules in a substance |
| thermosphere | A layer that contains only a tiny fraction of the atmosphere's mass. |
| troposphere | the lowest layer of atomosphere |
| winter solstice | December 21 or 22, the first day of winter, and it is when the northern hemisphere leans away from the sun. |
