Meterology

TermDefinition
albedo the fraction of total radiation that is reflected back by a surface
autumnal equinox the start of autumn in the northern hemisphere
conduction Transfer of heat through matter by molecular activity
convection Transfer of heat by mass movement or circulation within a substance.
greenhouse effect where radiatiojn is trapped in the troposphere and is heating the earth
heat the energy that is transfered from an object to another because of a difference in temperature
isotherm lines on a map that connect points that have the same temperature.
mesosphere the layer of the atmosphere immediately above the stratosphere and characterized by decreasing temperatures with height.
ozone a form of oxygen that combines three oxygen atoms into each molecule 03
radiation Tranfer of heat through wavelengths. Can travel in a vacuum.
reflection when an electromagnetic wave bounces off an object
scattering light redirected by small particles
spring equinox first day of spring
stratosphere from 12 km to 50 km. It has a constant but rising temperature
summer solstice June 21 or 22 in the Northern Hemisphere and Dec. 21 or 22 in the Southern Hemisphere
temperature a measure of the average kinetic energyy of individual atoms or molecules in a substance
thermosphere A layer that contains only a tiny fraction of the atmosphere's mass.
troposphere the lowest layer of atomosphere
winter solstice December 21 or 22, the first day of winter, and it is when the northern hemisphere leans away from the sun.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
