Stack #189251

Hydrology - intro hydrology 2nd yr university

QuestionAnswer
Air Entry Tension varies with soil type and water content of the soil -the greater the water content the greater the air entry tension -when all of the pores are filled with water the matric potential = 0
Capillarity determines the amount of soil tension (negative pressure) -the matric suction or matric potential
What are the 2 forces that act on water in unsaturated soil? Gravity and capillary forces
Dielectric Constant the ratio of capacitance of dielectric to the capacitance of air
Time Domain Reflectometry an electromagnetic wave passes through the soil from one metal rod to another. The amount of time that it takes the wave to reach the second rod depends on the soil moisture content. -based on the dielectric constants of materials
Field capacity the volumetric water content value when the drainage of gravitation water becomes negligible
Saturation the volumetric water content value when all of the soil pores are filled
Root zone the area of the soil profile where the roots are present -typically unsaturated -gauge pressure is negative (<0) -extends from the surface of the soil to the depth of the deepest roots
Plant available Water The water in the soil that is available for plant use
Water Table Boundary between the Tension Saturated Zone and the groundwater zone. -gauge pressure is equal to 0
Phreatic Zone aka groundwater zone -the saturated portion of the soil -where gauge pressure is positive (>0)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
