| Term | Definition |

| Permeable | Materials that have pores that allow water to pass through. |
| Saturated Zone | The area of permeable rock that is totally filled or saturated with water. |
| Impermeable | Materials that do NOT have pores that allow water to pass through. |
| Unsaturated Zone | The area that is filled with water & air, but isn't saturated. |
| Water Table | The top of the saturated zone. |
| Aquifer | Any underground layer of rock or sediment that holds water. |
| Spring | Flows out of cracks in the rocks or groundwater bubbles. |
| Artesian Well | Water rises because of pressure within an aquifer. |
| Geyser | A type of hot spring from which the water periodically erupts. |
| How does water move through layers of soil and rock? | Water Underground trickles down between particles of soil and through cracks and spaces in layers of rock. |
| How do people obtain water from an aquifer? | People can obtain groundwater from an aquifer by drilling a well below the water table. |
