Medical Vocab

Nose Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Septum A wall that separates the two nostrils. Made of bone in the back and cartilage towards the front
Nasal Cavity Large space found inside the head above and behind the nose. The bottom of the nasal cavity is the roof of the mouth
Mucous Membrane Lines the inside of the nose. Warms the air, moistens it, and filters it. Makes mucus
Cilia Small, microscopic hairs.
Olfactory Refers to the sense of smell.
Olfactory Bulb Enlargement of the olfactory nerves. Located at the top of the nasal cavity at the bottom of the brain.
Nostrils The nose's two holes. 2 nostrils- divided by a septum.
Receptors Nerve endings that respond to stimulation.
