What are the prophylactic uses of anticoagulants? Anticoagulants are used to prevent deep vein thrombosis & pulmonary embolism.
Which patients are at a high risk for clot formation? Patients with myocardial infarction, unstable angina, atrial fibrillation, mechanical heart valves and post op patients.
What is the antidote for Coumadin? Vitamin K
What is the antidote for Heparin? Protamine sulfate
What are the overall actions of anticoagulants? Anticoagulants prevent fibrin deposits, prevent thrombus from enlarging, and prevent clot complications - stroke, MI or PE.
What are the side effects/adverse reactions of anticoagulants? Hemorrhage, GI upset, toxicity
What are some patient teachings for anticoagulants? Avoid high contact sports, use electric razor, report signs/symptoms of bleeding: dark or blood-tinged urine or stools, excessive bruising, dizziness & abdominal pain.
