earthquake the shaking of the Earth that results from movement of rock beneath the Earth's surface
epicenter the point on Earth's surface directly above an earthquake's focus
focus the point beneath the Earth's surface where rock breaks under stress and causes an earthquake; the origin of the shaking
P wave a type of seismic wave that compresses and expands the ground; the first waves to arrive.
S wave a type of seismic wave that vibrates from sided to side and up and down; the second waves to arrive
seismic wave vibrations that travel through Earth carrying the energy released during an earthquake
