Rock A solid inorganic material that is usually made of two or more minerals.
Igneous, Sedimentary & Metamorphic The three types of rocks.
Igneous When melted rock cools or hardens on or under Earth's surface.
Intrusive Type of igneous rock that forms under Earth's surface.
Extrusive Type of igneous rock that forms on top of the Earth's surface.
Sedimentary Rocks formed of pieces of other rocks, plant and animal matter or dissolved minerals.
Detrital or Clastic A type of sedimentary rock where grains from minerals or broken rocks have been compressed.
Chemical Type of sedimentary rock where mineral-rich water evaporates and from other chemical processes.
Organic Type of sedimentary rock where dead plants and animals have been compressed.
Crystal Size The main difference between intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks.
Small Crystal Siize Found in extrusive igneous rocks.
Large Crystal Size Found in intrusive igneous rocks.
Granite Example of a intrusive igneous rock.
Basalt, Pumice & Obsidian Examples of a extrusive igneous rocks.
Limestone & Coal Examples of Organic Sedimentary Rocks.
Conglomerant Example of a Detrital or Clastic Sedimentary Rock.
Halite Example of a Chemical Sedimentary Rock.
Metamorphic Rock Form when existing rocks are heated or squeezed changing them physically and chemically.
Foliated Type of Metamorphic Rock where minerals form lines over time, great heat and pressure.
Nonfoliated Type of metamorphic rock where minerals appear uniform a rock that has been changed under great heat and pressure.
Gneiss, Schist, Slate Examples of Foliated Metamorphic Rock
Soapstone, Quartzite, Marble Examples of Non-foliated Metamorphic Rock
The Rock Cycle A model that shows a rock's continuing journey from one rock type to another.
Weathering & Erosion The process of wind, water or ice breaking down large rocks into small pieces.
Melting The process of sediments or other rocks being melted into Magma.
Large Amount of Heat, Pressure and Time The process of sedimentary or igneous rocks becoming a metamorphic rock.
Small Amount of Heat and Pressure on Sediment The process of forming sedimentary rocks.
