Plant-like Protists

Phytoplankton mostly microscopic marine organisms that carry out photosynthesis

Chlorophyta also known as green algae, can reproduce asexually and sexually
Chrysophyta group that contains diatoms, contain “glassy” cell walls that are formed into geometric shapes
Dinoflagellata commonly known as the dinoflagellates, they have two flagella and can live in both freshwater and marine habitats, they can carry out photosynthesis
Red Tide condition where certain red dinoflagellates reproduce and poison large areas of coastal waters
Phaeophyta commonly known as brown algae, multi-cellular and the largest, most complex group of seaweed algae that live along rocky shores in cooler environments
Holdfast root-like structure that anchors some brown algae to the sea floor
Rhodophyta also known as red algae, they are the most plentiful variety of seaweed, they live in warmer waters
Euglenophyta contains flagellates with chloroplasts, contain euglena
Euglena a flagellated protist that can carry out both photosynthesis and eat other organisms- they are both heterotrophic and autotrophic
