Earth Sci Weather
Weather words - clouds, storms, water cycle, etc.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| cirrus clouds | Clouds that are really high in the sky, look like horse tails, and bring good weather. |
| cumulus clouds | Clouds that look like cotton balls and mountains. |
| stratus clouds | Clouds that are low in the sky, look like a blanket, and bring snow and rain. |
| convection | When heat is transferred through liquids or gases. |
| conduction | When heat is transferred through solids and by touching something hot. |
| radiation | When heat is transferred through space. |
| transpiration | When plants give off water through their leaves. |
| evaporation | When liquid water changes to water vapor. |
| condensation | When water vapor changes to liquid water. In the sky, the water drops form clouds. |
| precipitation | When water falls from clouds in the form of rain or snow. |
| atmosphere | The air surrounding the Earth, made of nitrogen and oxygen. |
| troposphere | The first layer of the atmosphere where all weather and clouds are. |
| stratosphere | The second layer of the atmosphere where airplanes fly to be above the clouds. |
| mesosphere | The third layer of the atmosphere where meteorites burn and where the ozone layer is located. |
| thermosphere | The fourth layer of the atmosphere where spaceships orbit the Earth. |
| rain guage | Something to measure rain. |
| tornado | A violent windstorm that extends from the clouds to the surface of the Earth. |
| hurricane | A tropical storm with spiral winds and a lot of rain. |
| isobar | A line on a weather map that connects points of equal PRESSURE. |
| isotherm | A line on a map that connects points of equal TEMPERATURE. |
| saturated | When the air contains the maximum amount of moisture possible - 100% humidity. |
| relative humidity | A PERCENT - the amount of moisture that is actually in the air compared to how much moisture the air can hold. |
| psychrometer | Something to measure the amount of moisture in the air. |
| warm front | When a warm air mass advances towards a cold air mass. Stratus clouds form and bring little precipitation. |
| cold front | When a cold air mass advances towards a warm air mass. Cumulus clouds form, bring heavy rains, and temperatures fall. |
| air mass | A large body of air with similar temperature and moisture properties. |
| pressure | The force that the atmosphere exerts on a specific point - from the force of gravity of the air above that point. |
| wind | Moving air. |
| dew point | The temperature when the aire is saturated with moisture. |
