Geology-Map Skills -Topographic Maps
| Vocab Word | Definition |
|---|---|
| topography | The shape of the land determined by elevation, relief, and landforms |
| elevation | The height above sea level |
| relief | The difference in elevation between the highest and lowest part of areas. |
| atmosphere | sphere that includes the gasses that surrounds the Earth |
| hydrosphere | sphere that includes Earth’s water and ice |
| biosphere | sphere that includes all living things |
| lithosphere | sphere that includes the rigid layer made up of the uppermost part of the mantle and crust |
| geology | the study of solid rock on Earth and what forces shape the land |
| meteorology | the study of the atmosphere and weather |
| astronomy | the study of space |
| plain | landform made up of flat or gently rolling land with low relief |
| mountain | landform with high elevation and high relief |
| plateau | landform that has a flat surface with high relief and elevation |
| geology | study of the forces that have shaped the Earth |
| depression | an area on Earth that can collect water |
| environment science | the study of how living organisms interact with the Earth |
| oceanography | the study of the water on Earth |
| contour lines | solid lines on a topographic map that connect areas that have all the same elevation |
| contour elevation notation | number that is part of a contour line and tells you the elevation of that contour line |
| longitude lines | imaginary lines on a map that look like long strands of hair |
| destructive | Is erosion an example of a destructive or constructive force? |
| gentle | If contour lines are spread far apart, will that area have a gentle or a steep slope? |
| inner core | Which layer of the earth is made of solid metal? |
| yes | Is the contour interval for a given topographic map always the same? |
| equator | line of latitude that is at zero degrees is surrounds the earth like a belt |
| steep | If contour lines are close together, will that area have a gentle or a steep slope? |
| hilltop | a closed contour line that has no other contour lines inside of it |
| Prime Meridian | line of longitude that is at zero degrees and splits the earth into the eastern and western hemispheres |
| crust | thinnest and outermost layer of the Earth |
| cliff | contour lines that are so close together that they start to look like one thick line |
| contour interval | the space between the contour lines |
| depression | closed contour lines that have dashed lines pointing inward |
| latitude lines | imaginary lines on a map that look like steps of a ladder |
| topographic map | a map that shows the elevation and relief of an area |
| latitude | When determining the exact coordinates of a location, do you write down the latitude or the longitude first? |
| northern | Which hemisphere is entirely located above the equator? |
| southern | Which hemisphere is entirely located below the equator? |
| eastern | Which hemisphere is entirely located to the right of the Prime Meridian? |
| western | Which hemisphere is entirely located to the left of the Prime Meridian? |
