Lesson 53

Kingdom Monera

QuestionAnswer
Monera one of the original five kingdoms, includes bacteria and blue-green algae, commonly referred to today as Prokaryota
Protista one of the original five kingdoms, includes algae, slime mold, and protozoa
Fungi characterized by their reproduction through spores, includes molds, yeasts, and mushrooms, they are the most important decomposers in the biosphere
Plantae one of the original five kingdoms, includes mosses, ferns, and seeded plants
Animalia one of the original five kingdoms, includes invertebrates and vertebrates
Eukaryota a domain that includes organisms with eukaryotic cells (consisting of membrane-bound organelles) such as protists, fungi, plants and animals
Archaebacteria prokaryotes that were probably the first organisms on earth, also known as archae, can live in harsh environments and are not “true” bacteria
Eubacteria prokaryotes that are “true” bacteria, susceptible to antibiotics and exist in nearly every environmental condition
Prokaryote an organism whose nucleus is not separated from its cytoplasm but rather a nucleoid “blob” containing a single chromosome
Organelle a cellular structure with a specific purpose such as mitochondria
Nucleoid nucleus-like structure in a prokaryote that contains a single chromosome of DNA
Peptidoglycan structural molecule, consisting of carbohydrate polymers linked by proteins, found in the outer cell wall of prokaryotes
Photoautotrophs organisms that receive energy from light but fix inorganic carbon dioxide for carbon
Chemoautotrophs organisms that receive energy chemically but fix inorganic carbon dioxide for carbon
Photoheterotrophs organisms that receive energy from light but ingest organisms for organic carbon
Chemoheterotrophs organisms that receive energy and organic carbon by ingesting organisms or substances containing fixed carbon
Photosynthesis process in which organisms containing chlorophyll use light energy to make organic compounds from inorganic materials
Aerobic needing oxygen to carry out life processes, humans are examples
Chloroplasts organelle found in photosynthetic organisms that contains chlorophyll, responsible for absorbing light used to drive photosynthesis
Mitochondria organelle responsible for cellular respiration, releasing energy from food and storing it

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
