Earth Interior
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| CRUST | Outermost surface of Earth |
| OCEANIC CRUST | The floor beneath the oceans; Thinner than continental crust |
| CONTINENTAL CRUST | Much thicker than oceanic crust in land areas |
| LAYERS OF THE EARTH | **Crust **Mantle **Outer Core **Inner Core |
| MANTLE | Made up of hot, dense rock; Located between the crust & the core; Almost 3,000 km thick; Temperature and pressure rises as you go deeper |
| LITHOSPHERE | Crust and top (upper) layer of the mantle; Divided into shifting tectonic plates |
| ASTHENOSPHERE | Plastic-like layer of the Earth's mantle; Upon which the plates move |
| CONVECTION CURRENTS | Circular current movements in the Earth's mantle RISES as it heats up; Provides energy for plate tectonics |
| CORE | The CENTER of the Earth; Made mainly of iron and nickel; Located BELOW the mantle |
| OUTER CORE | Molten (liquid) nickel and iron; Located between the mantle and the inner core |
| INNER CORE | Solid, made up mainly of iron; Located in the center of the Earth |
| EARTH'S MAGNETC FIELD | A gigantic magnetic field surrounding the Earth; Protecting the planet and all life from space radiation |
