Descriptions of Minerals and Rocks

TermDefinition
Igneous rock A rock that forms from the cooling of magma.
Metamorphic rock A rock that forms from intense heat and pressure.
Sedimentary rock A rock that forms from the compaction and cementation of sediment.
Inner Core The innermost layer of the Earth.
Outer Core The second to innermost layer of the earth.
Mantle The layer of the earth in which is purely liquid.
Crust The top layer of the earth that floats on the mantle.
Oceanic crust The ocean layer of crust made of basalt.
Lithosphere A layer of the Earth that is in between the Crust and the Mantle.
Asthenosphere A layer of the Earth that is in the middle of the mantle.
