| germination | The sprouting of a seed. |
| maturity | The stage at which organisms can reproduce. (adult) |
| fertilization | The joining together of a sperm and an egg cell. |
| pollination | The transfer of pollen from a male plant part to a female plant part of seed plants. |
| spore | A reproductive structure of some plants, such as mosses and ferns, that can form a new plant. |
| complete metamorphosis | A complex change that most insects undergo that includes eggs, larva, pupa and adult. |
| incomplete metamorphosis | Developmental change in some insects in which a nymph hatches from an egg and gradually develops into an adult. egg, nymph, and adult |
| nymph | An immature form of an insect that undergoes incomplete metamorphosis. |
| environment | All the living and nonliving things that surround and affect an organism. |
| adaptation | A trait or characteristic that helps an organism survive. |
| physical adaptation | An adaptation to a body part. |
| behavioral adaptation | Something an animal does that helps it survive. |
| instinct | A behavior an animal knows how to do without having to learn it. |
| heredity | The process by which traits are passed from parents to offspring. |
| learned behavior | A behavior that an animal doesn't begin life with but develops as a result of experience or by observing other animals. |
