Term | Definition |

salt water | Ocean water. Almost ALL water on Earth is in the oceans. |
fresh water | A tiny portion of Earth's water. It contains very little salt. |
evaporation | The change in state from a liquid to a gas. |
condensation | The change in state from a gas to a liquid. |
precipitation | Water that can fall back to Earth as rain, sleet, hail, or snow. |
water cycle | The never-ending movement of water between Earth's surface and the air. |
atmosphere | A layer of gases that surrounds Earth. |
oxygen | One of the gases in Earth's atmosphere. Animals need this to survive. |
temperature | A measure of how hot or cold something is. |
weather | The condition of the atmosphere at any one place and time. |
melting | When a solid becomes a liquid. |
freezing | When a liquid becomes a solid. |
ground water | Water that soaks in and flows underground. |
run off | Water that is unable to soak into the ground and so it flows across the land. |
the sun | The source of energy that causes the water cycle. |
Hydrologist | A person who studies the quality and movement of water on Earth. |
Meteorologist | A person who studies weather conditions. |
thermometer | A tube filled with liquid to measure temperature. |
rain gauge | An instrument used to measure precipitation. |
wind vane | An instrument used to show the direction that the wind is coming from. |
anemometer | An instrument used to measure wind speed. Also called a wind meter. |
cirrus clouds | Clouds that are thin and wispy. |
stratus clouds | Clouds that look like thin blankets. Usually mean that a light rain or snow is coming. |
cumulus clouds | Clouds that look like piles of cotton. Usually means that fair weather is coming. |
cumulonimbus clouds | Clouds that look like piles of dark cotton. Usually means that rain is coming. |
