S1 Matter

Solids, Liquids and Gases

QuestionAnswer
What are the three states of matter Liquid, Solid , Gas
Give an example of a liquid One could be: Water, Milk etc
Give an example of a solid Could be: Rock, Iron, Wood etc
Give an example of a gas Could be: Carbon Dioxide, Oxygen, Hydrogen
What is matter All of the stuff in the world is matter. anything that takes up space is matter.
What is a measuring cylinder used for? It meaures the volume of liquids
How is a measuring cylinder used to measure the volume of a solid object? You put the object into the measuring cylinder and compare the water level before and after. The increase is the volume of the object.
The curved water line in a graduated cylinder is called….. A meniscus
How do you calculate the volume of a solid? Length x width x height
How do you calculate density? Mass divided by volume
Define volume. How much space matter takes up
Define density. Relates the mass of an object to its volume
Define Mass. The amount of matter in an object
What unit do you use to measure matter? Grams
What unit do we use normally use to measure volume? Centimetres cubed
Matter is anything.... which occupies space and has mass
Mass is the ... amount of matter in anything
Mass is measured in ... grams
Solids have a….. fixed shape and volume
Liquids have a fixed… Volume
Liquids have no fixed… Shape
Gases have no fixed… Volume OR Shape
Why can gases be compressed? Because there are large spaces between its particles.
What word do Scientist use to describe the change that takes place in the size of substances when they are heated? Expansion
Are gas particles are free to move? Yes
When a solid changes to a liquid this is called… Melting
When a liquid changes to steam this is called.. Boiling
When steam changes to water this is called…. Condensing
When water changes to ice this is called…. Freezing
If a liquid changes to a gas slowly this is called…. Evaporating
Diffusion is the movement of particles from an area of…. high concentration to an area of low concentration until it is evenly spread.
Can liquids be compressed? NO
Can gases be compressed? YES
What word do Scientist use to describe the change that takes place in the size of substances when they are cooled? Contraction
Do the particles of a substance increase in size when they are heated? No - the spaces between the particles increase in size.
Do the spaces between the particles of a substance decrease in size when they are cooled? Yes
In which state of matter does Diffusion take place fastest? Gases
