What do geologists study? Rocks
If a rock shows a fossil that has water plants and shells in it, what does this tell you? It was once at the bottom of the sea.
What mineral characteristic refers to how light reflects off a mineral? Luster
What is an igneous rock? It is rock made from magma from a volcano.
What size are the grains on an igneous rock when it cools slowly? Big
How does a rock become a metamorphic rock? By heat and pressure
Where do you usually find sedimentary rocks? On the ocean floor
What part of an animal's body is less likely to become a fossil? It's skin.
What does weathering do? It changes large rock into small/tiny rocks.
When do glaciers form? When more snow falls in the winter than melts in the summer.
What is responsible for most erosion? Water
What is a delta? It forms when a river deposits sediments where it meets the ocean or a large body of water.
What is soil composed of? Decomposed plants, animals, rocks, and minerals.
Define permeability. It is the rate water can pass through a porous material.
Which soil horizon contains the subsoil? B Horizon
Which soil has the lowest permeability? Clay
What are Earth's plates? When Earth's crust is broken into large sections.
Earthquakes Shaking of the ground when large sections of the Earth slide past each other.
What are surface ways? They are seismic waves that case the MOST damage.
How would you describe the inner part of the mantle? It is mushy.
What happens at a fault? The Earth's crust breaks or splits open
What are the 4 layers of the Earth. 1-crust 2-mantle 3-outer core 4-inner core
