Rock Cycle

Words we will use during our Rocks and Minerals Unit

deposition a process when sediments, soil and rocks are added to a landform
erosion the process through which natural forces, such as wind and water, carry away bits of rock and other materials over time
extrusive rock igneous rocks which form by crystallization of magma at the surface of the earth
lava hot molten or semi fluid liquid rock erupted from a volcano or fissure, or solid rock resulting from-the cooling of this
lithification the process or processes by which unconsolidated materials are converted into coherent solid rock, as by compaction or cementation
magma is hot fluid or semi fluid material below or within the Earth's crust from which lava and other igneous rock formed by cooling
metamorphic a type of rock formed when high heat and pressure change one form of rock into another form
rock cycle a group of changes or transitions through geologic among the three main rock types sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous
sediment a small piece of solid material that has been broken down by weathering
sedimentary a type of rock formed when layers of sediment become squeezed and glued together by natural processes
weathering the process through which natural forces, such as wind and water, break down rocks and other materials into small peices
intrusive rock igneous rock that cool very slowly beneath the surface and is created by magma
soil the top layer of Earth's surface that supports plant growth.
