Lesson 40

Freshwater Aquatic Biomes

QuestionAnswer
Aquatic Biomes biomes that occur in water
Freshwater Biomes defined upon whether the water is standing (ponds, lakes, and wetlands) or moving (streams and rivers), and the source of the water
Marine Biomes defined upon oceanic currents and the depth of the water
Freshwater water with less than a 1% concentration of salt
Aquifers underground freshwater reservoirs
Littoral zone uppermost zone and the water closest to the shore of lakes and ponds- photosynthesis takes place all of the way to the bottom of this zone
Limnetic zone the top zone of open water in lakes and ponds- photosynthesis decreases as the water becomes deeper or murkier
Nekton swimming animals
Zooplankton animal-like plankton
Profundal zone the deepest zone of lakes- photosynthesis cannot take place in this zone because light cannot penetrate the deep water
Benthos animals that live and feed at the bottom of bodies of water
Turnover phenomenon that takes place in lakes and the neritic zone of marine biomes- characterized by warm water rising and cold water sinking
Epilimnion the upper layer of lake water
Hypolimnion the lower layer of lake water
Headwaters the starting point for a stream or river
Mouth the place where a stream terminates and enters a larger body of water
Wetlands standing water bodies, such as marshes, bogs, and swamps that are characterized by water-loving plants
Hydrophytes plants that thrive in shallow water and humid conditions
