Metamorphic Rocks
HSAG unit definition
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| contact metamorphism | mineralogy and texture of a body of rock are changed due to the heat and pressure from an intrusive body of magma. |
| hydrothermal metamorphism | metamorphism due to a high temperature fluid of variable composition |
| foliated texture | mineral grains from pre-existing rocks are oriented parallel to each other or organized into distinctive bands during metamorphosis |
| non-foliated texture | non-foliated metamorphic rocks appear massive or granular without the characteristic parallel mineral grains in foliated rocks |
| gneissic texture | metamorphic rocks that have minerals separated into light and dark bands |
| slaty cleavage | metamorphic rocks that are fine-grained, dull surfaces, and split apart easily. |
| regional metmorphism | metamorphism over a large region that could create an orogenic event. (mountain building) |
| porphyroblastic texture | metamorphic rock which has many porphyroblasts |
| schistosity | the layering in a coarse grained, crystalline rock due to the parallel arrangement of platy mineral grains such as muscovite and biotite |
| parent rock (protolith) | rock type before metamorphism occurred |
| recrystallization | heat and pressure changes the crystalline structure of a mineral during metamorphism |
| porphyroblast | a large mineral crystal in a metamorphic rock which has grown within the finer grained groundmass |
