Extinction This results when a species does not have traits that enable it to survive, so it dies out completely.
Fossil The historical sequence of life found in the layers of the Earth’s crust
Mutation A permanent change in the DNA of an organism that may be helpful, harmful, or have no effect
Species A group of closely related individuals that can mate and create more of the same type of organism
Natural Selection The process in which individuals that are better adapted to their environment survive and reproduce more successfully than others
Evidence for Evolution Different characteristics show up in individuals of a population because they inherit different genes from their parents
Evolution Changes in the inherited characteristics of a species over time
Diversity Members of a population have differences in traits or adaptations
adaptation A characteristic (structure or behavior) that improves an individual’s ability to survive and reproduce in a particular environment
Fossil Record The remains of an organism preserved in rock
Variation Differences in the genetic code create a trait in an organism that is different from others in the species
