chapter 10
heat energy
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Freezing | changing from a liquid to solid |
Evaporation/Vaporization | changing liquid to a gas |
Energy | the ability to move matter |
Kinetic energy | energy of a moving object |
Potential energy | energy stored in an object (Energy of an object sitting still) |
Temperature | average kinetic energy of molecules which tells us how hot or cold something is. Measures Heat |
Heat | A form of energy that flows between two objects that have different temperatures |
Radiation | Transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves (sun) |
Conduction | Movement of energy through direct contact (solids) |
Insulation | Preventing heat from flowing in or out of a material (poor conductor) |
Thermal expansion | Matter expands when the temperature is raised |
Pressure | The force on each unit of area of a surface |
Melting | Changing from a solid to liquid |
Condensation | Changing from gas to liquid |
Forms of energy | Solar, wind, geothermal, nuclear, hydroelectric |
Solar cell | Captures sunlight to make energy |
fault | a huge crack in the earth's surface |
focus | the point where an earthquake starts |
seismic wave | a vibration that spreads out |
epicenter | the point on earth's surface |
aftershock | shaking of the earths crust after an earthquake |
magnitude | the brightness of a star |
vent | the center opening in a volcano |
lava | magma that rescues earth's surface |
crater | a cup like substance |
hot spot | a very hot part of a volcanic |
cinder-cone volcano | a sleep sided cone that forms |
shield volcano | a wide gently slope that slides |
composite volcano | cone formed from explosives |
geothermal energy | heat from below earth's surface |
