| Term | Definition |

| Grasslands | Ecosystem in which there is too much water to form a desert, but enough water to support a forest |
| Desert-Grassland Boundary | Area between a desert and a grassland where increased rainfall enable some grasses to grow |
| Prairie | Grassland area characterized by rolling hills, plains, and sod-forming grasses |
| Steppe | Grassland area that gets less than 50 cm of rain per year, characterized by short bunchgrasses |
| Sod-Forming Grasses | Grass that forms a mat of soil and roots |
| Humus | Layer of organic matter formed from decaying plant matter |
| Bunchgrasses | Short, fine-bladed grass that grows in clumps |
| Savanna | Tropical grassland ranging from dry to scrubland to wet, open woodland |
| Runner | Long, horizontal stem of many plants that runs below the ground, making the plant resistant to drought, fire, and grazing animals |
| Tuft | Large clump of tall, coarse grass |
| Vertical Feeding Pattern | Pattern in which different species eat vegetation at different heights |
