How do we test how hard a mineral is? The Moh's scale
The hardest mineral is the diamond.
On the Moh's scale, the diamond is a 10.
On the Moh's scale, talc is a 1 0r 2.
What is the best way to identify a mineral? by how hard it is
Minerals are in rocks.
Scratching the mineral on tile to see what color it makes is called a streak test.
A fossil in not a rock nor a mineral.
You find something that looks like a crystal. It is a mineral.
One attribute of a mineral is its luster. Luster means how shiny or dull it is.
One attribute of a mineral is its texture. Texture means how it feels.
One attribute of a mineral is its hardness. We test hardness with a scratch test.
One attribute of a mineral is its color, but we can't always just use this because... different minerals can be the same color.
A shape that repeats in pattern and color is a crystal.
A common mineral we use every day is salt.
Pencil lead is a mineral called graphite.
Baby powder is a mineral called talc.
Unlike a rock, a mineral is the same all the way through.
