Organism any single living thing
Population any species of organisms that interbreeds and lives in a particular geographic area
Community all of the populations that inhabit a particular geographic area
Ecosystem this is made up of all of the populations and non-living elements including: water, solar energy, wind, temperature, soil, mountains, etc. within a particular area
Biosphere the global ecosystem; it consists of all biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) elements that exist from an altitude of several kilometers of the earth’s atmosphere to the depths of the deepest parts of the ocean
Trade Winds wings that are moving back toward the equator from 23/5 degrees north and south latitudes
Temperate Zones areas between 23.5 degrees north latitude and the North Pole and 23.5 degrees south latitude and the South Pole
Terrestrial Biomes any biomes occurring on land
Tundra biome consisting of the northernmost land area on earth, known for long cold winters and short summers with long days
Permafrost soil that remains frozen, commonly found in regions of the tundra
Taiga biome south of the tundra that is dominated by conifer forests
Temperate Forest biome that lies in the temperate regions and characterized by deciduous trees (trees that shed their leaves annually)
Tropical Rainforest biome located in the lowlands near the equator, characterized by the greatest diversity of organisms
Canopy tallest trees which form the top layer in a forest
Epiphytes tropical plants that grow on other trees in order to reach heights where they can receive adequate sun for photosynthesis
Ectothermic body temperature-dependent on the temperature of the environment
Grasslands Biome found in the temperate and tropical zones, characterized by reduced amounts of moisture and/or prolonged periods of no moisture--leading agricultural regions of the world today
Savanna Biome of tall-grass grassland with trees found in the tropical zone of the Southern Hemisphere, characterized by the wide variety of animal life
Scavengers animals that eat the remains of dead matter
Chaparral Biome characterized by hot, dry summers and wet autumns and winters
Desert Biome characterized by extremely dry conditions radical changes between excessive daytime heat and freezing temperatures at night
Nocturnal orgamisms most active at night
