| Classify | To put things together in groups based on similar characteristics |
| Organism | A living thing |
| scientific name | The unique name given to each species of organism that tells its genus and species levels of classification |
| common name | A non-scientific name for an organism used by people in a specific area |
| Tentacles | Appendages that can grab and sting their prey |
| Appendage | A part that comes out of the main body section (leg, wing, fin, tentacle, antenna) |
| Segmented | The body is in sections (earthworm, insect, leech) |
| Exoskeleton | The skeleton is the outside covering of the body (insect, spider, crab) |
| Endoskeleton | The skeleton is on the inside of the body (deer, snake, human, bird, fish) |
| Bilateral Symmetry | The body parts are arranged as two mirror images. |
| Radial Symmetry | The body parts are arranged like the spokes of a wheel. |
| Unicellular | Organisms that are made of only one cell. |
| Multicellular | Organisms that are made of more than one cell. |
| Division | The third highest level of classification in the plant and fungi kingdoms. |
| Genus | The second smallest level of classification. The level that has closely related organisms with slightly different genetic codes. |
| Species | The smallest level of classification. The level in which two organisms have the same genetic code and can mate and reproduce more of the same species. |
| Dichotomous Key | A tool to help identify the name of an organism by using paired, opposite characteristics |
| Binomial Nomenclature | The 2-word naming system that creates a scientific name for each species |
| 8 Levels of Classification | Domain--> Kingdom--> Phylum (Division)--> Class--> Order--> Family--> Genus--> Species |
| 3 Domains | Bacteria, Archaea, Eukarya |
| 4 Kingdoms in Eukarya | Protista, Fungi, Plant, Animal |
| 6 Phyla in Animal Kingdom | Cnidarian, Annelid, Mollusks, Echinoderms, Arthropods, Chordates |
| 4 Divisions in Plant Kingdom | Mosses, Ferns, Conifers, Flowering |
