Topic 6:Insolation.B

Insolation & the Seasons, pgs. (105-109)

QuestionAnswer
Define Insolation: Incoming Solar Radiation.
State the two general ways that insolation can vary. 1) Intensity (strength) and 2) duration.
Why are the Tropics always hot? High angle of insolation, high intensity, hot.
Name the maximum angle of insolation. Zenith, 90 degrees, directly over head. Minimal refraction or reflection of insolation as light passes through less atmosphere.
Why are the Poles always cold? Low angle of insolation, low intensity, cold. Increased refraction and reflection of insolation as light must pass through more atmosphere.
Name the minimum angle of insolation. Zero degrees, no light.
High angle the light is concentrated, strong. Low angle is what? Diffuse , weak, spread out over an area.
If angle of insolation is 90 degrees at 10 degrees North, what is the angle of insolation at the Equator or 20 degrees North? 80 Degrees is the angle of insolation as angle decreases one degree for every one degree north or south that one travels away from the solar zenith.
How does change in Latitude effect intensity of insolation? Latitude where Sun is at zenith, angle of insolation = 90 degrees has max energy. Polar region with 24 hours of night has minimal energy receipt.
Explain how seasonal variation effects energy receipt. Summer entails high angle of insolation, hot. Winter calls for low angle, low intensity, cold.
How does time of day effect energy receipt? Sunrise & sunset = low angle, low intensity, cold. Solar noon = high angle, high intensity, hot.
Describe duration of insolation. How long the Sun is out.
Name the dates where duration of insolation is maximum, and minimum, here in NYS. June 21 max., December 21 min. 15 hrs day/9 hrs night, vs 9/15
Latitude and Season together impact which two insolation variables? Angle and Duration of Insolation.
When will you be enjoying greater intensity of insolation, when you have a long shadow or a short shadow? Short shadow. High angle of insolation, high intensity, hot.
What time will the air temperature be hottest each day if there are no overriding factors? Solar noon plus two (2) hours.
What month of the year is it hottest or coldest? The Solstice plus six (6) weeks. Or, August 1st for hottest, February 1st for coldest.
Why the six week time temperature lag? Earth the rock takes time to absorb and then re-radiate EM radiation.
Is average air temp increasing or decreasing during a solar energy surplus? Increasing. More energy in, less out.
Is average air temp increasing or decreasing during a solar energy deficit? Decreasing. More energy out, less in.
Can you complete pages 110 and 111, all multiple choice questions, 11-31? Complete and remit correct answers to the instructor!!
