Science Test

TermDefinition
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
Mass A measurement of the amount of matter in an object
Volume A measurement of how much space an object takes up
Weight The force of gravity between Earth and an object
Density A measurement of how tightly packed the matter in an object is
Conduct When materials allow energy to flow through them easily
Insulate To prevent heat from passing through
Compound Any substance that is formed by the chemical combination of two or more elements and acts like a single substance
Solid A form of matter that has a definite shape and takes up a definite shape and takes up a definite amount of shape
Liquid A form of matter that takes up a definite amount of space and has no definite shape
Gas A form of matter that does not take up a definite amount of space and has no definite shape
Plasma A gas that is composed of free-floating ions (positively charged) and free electrons (negatively charged), conducts electrical currents, in stars and space, the solar wind in our solar system is made of plasma
State of Matter One of the three main forms that matter can take- solid, liquid, gas
Melting Point The particular temperature for each substance at which it changes state from a solid to a liquid
Boiling Point The particular temperature for each substance at which it changes from a liquid to a gas
Sublimation When frozen gas skips the liquid state and goes straight from a solid to a gas
Evaporation The slow changing of a liquid into a gas
Condensation The changing of a gas into a liquid
Substance A particular kind of matter with uniform properties
Conservation of Matter Matter cannot be created or destroyed. It merely changes
Mixture A physical combination of two or more substances that are blended together without forming something new
Solution A mixture of substances that are blended so completely that the mixture looks the same everywhere
Physical Change A change in size, shape, or state without any change in identity
Chemical Change A change of matter that occurs when atoms link together in a new way, creating a new substance different from the original substances
Water Vapor Water in the form of a gas
Buoyancy The ability or tendency to float in water or air or some other fluid
