quantifiable can be measured (as opposed to qualitative, which is descriptive)
confidence measure of accuracy
robust strength of data, based on quantity and precision
ocean surface salinity amount of salt at the ocean's surface
ocean acidification decrease in pH due to absorbtion of CO2 by ocean; CO2 + H2O = H2CO3 (carbonic acid)
sea ice forms from the edge of land out over ocean; sea ice is fresher than ocean water
glacier ice formation on land
irreversable cannot be reversed
RCP - Representative Carbon Pathway possible future scenario of CO2 emissions; based on statistical analysis of population and consumption trends
permafrost thick subsurface layer of soil that remains frozen throughout the year, occuring mainly in polar regions
mid-latitude regions halfway between equator and poles; continental US would be considered mid-latitude
high latitude regions areas nearest the poles; the Artctic and Antarctice
Arctic Area around the North pole; Polar bears live here;
Antarctic area around the South pole; actual continent with large glaciers and extensive sea ice
precipitation intensity shorter storms which dump more water at once instead of spreading out the precipitation over longer periods; likely to increase flooding
