The Galapagos

QuestionAnswer
Embryo an organism in its early development before it has reached a form that can be easily recognized
Embryologist a scientist that studies embryos
Common Descent theory that says all living things evolved and changed over time from a common ancestor
Homologous Structures those found on organisms that have developed from the same ancestral parts, but meet different needs
Adaptive Radiation (also called divergent evolution) is where one species gives rise to many different species. These species appear to be very different on the outside, but may be very similar on the inside
Divergent Evolution occurs where one species gives rise to other species that are different externally, but similar internally
Analogous Structures those that are similar in appearance and function, but have different origins and usually different internal structure
Convergent Evolution this has occurred when organisms have different origins but similar characteristics and behavior
Vestigial Organ one that is no longer useful to a species but remains within a species and over time becomes reduced significantly in size
