Lipid Lowering Drugs
Term | Definition |
---|---|
statins (e.g. lovastatin, pravastatin, simvastatin) | inhibit HMG-CoA reductase in liver; adverse effects: MYOSITIS, increased LFTs |
Ezetimibe | inhibits cholesterol absorption in intestines to significantly decrease LDL (no effect on HDL or triglycerides); adverse effects: myalgias, possible increased LFTs |
Fibric acids (e.g. gemfibrozil, fenofibrate) | stimulate lipoprotein lipase in blood to decrease LDL, increase HDL, and *significantly decrease triglycerides*; adverse effects: MYOSITIS, increased LFTs |
Bile acid sequestrants (e.g. cholestyramine, colestipol, colesevelam) | bind to bile acids in the intestine and prevent them from being reabsorbed into the blood to decrease LDL; adverse effects: bad taste, GI upset |
Niacin | MOA unknown, but acts in liver to decrease LDL, decrease triglycerides, and *significantly increase HDL*; adverse effects: facial flushing, nausea, paresthesias, pruritus, increased LFTs, insulin resistance, exacerbates gout |
