Pluton

TermDefinition
Pluton A body of intrusive igneous rock.
Xenolith A rock fragment which becomes enveloped in a larger rock.
Intrusive Of, relating to, or formed by intrusion.
Sills A tabular sheet intrusion that has intruded between older layers of sedimentary rock, beds of volcanic lava or tuff.
Laccoliths A sheet intrusion (or concordant pluton) that has been injected between two layers of sedimentary rock.
Batholiths A large body of intrusive igneous rock.
Dikes A sheet of rock that formed in a fracture in a pre-existing rock body.
Columnar Joints A geological structure where sets of intersecting closely spaced fractures, referred to as joints, result in the formation of a regular array of polygonal prisms, or columns.
