LMS Ch 6.2 DR

Igneous Rock Directed Reading

QuestionAnswer
When magma cools and hardens, it forms?? Igneous Rock.
Most igneous rock can be identified as because the minerals in the rock crystallize as igneous rock forms from magma?? Crystalline.
The of minerals in the rock and its texture determine the identity of the igneous rock?? Chemical Composition.
Magma forms when rock?? Melts.
Three factors that affect whether rock melts include temperature, pressure, and?? The presence of fluids in the rock.
Rock melts when?? Its temperature rises above the melting point of minerals in the rock.
The first minerals to melt have the?? Lowest melting point.
How does the cooling process of magma compare with the melting process?? The cooling process is the reverse of the process of partial melting.
As temperature drops, the first minerals to crystallize from magma have?? The highest freezing point.
The crystallization and removal of different minerals from the cooling magma is called?? Fractional Crystallization.
In some crystals, why is the chemical composition of the inner part different from that of the outer part?? The composition of the magma changed while the crystal was growing.
Intrusive Igneous Rock?? Rock formed from the cooling and solidification of magma beneath Earth's surface.
Extrusive Igneous Rock?? Rock formed from the cooling and solidification of lava at Earth's surface.
Coarse-Grained Texture?? The texture of igneous rock that is composed of large mineral grains.
Fine-Grained Texture?? The texture of igneous rock that is composed of small crystals.
Porphyritic Texture?? The texture of quickly cooled magma that has a mixture of large and small crystals.
Glassy Texture?? The texture of quickly cooled magma that contains a small percentage of dissolved gases.
Vesicular Texture?? The texture of quickly cooled magma that contains dissolved gases that become trapped as bubbles.
Intrusion?? An igneous rock mass that forms underground.
Batholith?? The largest of all intrusions. (Only that one.)
Stock?? An intrusion similar to a batholith. (Only that one.)
Laccolith?? A dome that forms when magma flows between rock layers spreads.
Sill?? A mass that forms when magma flows between rock layers and hardens.
Dike?? A mass that forms when magma flows and hardens across layers of rock rather than parallel to them.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
