Water Unit Vocab Eco

QuestionAnswer
aquifer A body of rock or sediment that stores and allows the flow of water.
biomagnification The build-up of pollutants at higher levels of the food chain.
dam A structure built across a river to control a river's flow.
desalination The process of removing salt from ocean water.
groundwater Water found beneath Earth's surface.
non-point source pollution Pollution from many different sources that are often hard to identify.
permeability Ability of a rock or sediment to let fluid flow through its open spaces.
point source pollution Pollution coming from a single source.
porosity Percentage of a rock or sediment that consists of open spaces.
potable Suitable for drinking.
recharge zone An area in which water travels downward to become part of an aquifer.
reservoir A body of water that forms behind a dam.
river system A flowing network of rivers and streams draining a river basin.
surface water All water found above the ground.
thermal pollution An increase in temperature in a body of water that harms the organisms living there.
wastewater Water that contains waste from homes and businesses.
water pollution The introduction of chemical, physical, biological agents into water; damaging water quality.
watershed An area of land that is drained by a river system.
