Types of Maps Directed Reading

What do topographic maps show?? Surface features of Earth.
What do most topographic maps show besides natural features?? Constructed features, such as buildings, and roads.
What are contour lines used to show on topographic maps?? Elevation.
What is a contour line?? An isogram that connects points of equal elevation.
Because points at a given elevation are connected, the shape of?? The contour lines reflects the shape of the land.
What is the contour interval?? The difference in elevation between one contour line and the next.
What are geologic maps designed to show?? The distribution of geologic features.
What in particular do geologic maps show about a given area?? Types of rocks and locations of faults, folds, and other structures.
What are soil maps based on?? Surveys that record information about properties of soil.
What do meteorologists use maps for?? To record and predict the weather.
What other things do Earth scientists use maps to study?? Changes in topography, available resources, and factors that affect climate.
Major Highways?? Red.
Bodies of Water?? Blue.
Buildings, Boundaries, Roads, and Railroads?? Black.
Contour Lines?? Brown or Black.
Areas not verified by field exploration?? Purple.
Forested Areas?? Green.
