Ch 2 The structure of Matter

Property is things that helps identify an object
Molecule is The smallest particle of a substance that has the same properties as the substance. (Water - all molecules are alike; raindrops, fountain, ocean, river, drinking water)
Atom is The building block of matter.
Density is The amount of matter per unit volume. (number of atoms in a certain space)
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
Solid a form of matter that has a definite shape and volume.
Gas a Form of matter that has no definite shape or volume.
Liquid a Form of matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape
State of Matter The forms that matter has solid, Liquid, or gas.
Model A picture, an idea, or an object and how something else looks or works
Electron A tiny, negatively charged particle of an atom that moves around the nucleus.
Neutron A tiny,uncharged particle in the nucleus of an atom that is similar in size to a proton.
Nucleus The central part of an atom
Proton A tiny, positively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom.
Element Matter that has only one kind of atom.
Natural Element An element that is found in nature.
Symbol One or more letters that represent the name of an element. (NICKNAME OF ELEMENTS)
Compound something formed when atoms of two or more elements join together.
