Topic 1: Prologue

Introduction to Earth Science, Scientific Method,% Error Probs.& *Density

QuestionAnswer
Define Observation: Information input via one or more of 5 senses; includes all measurements.
Define Inference: An educated guess or hypothesis; includes all future predictions.
Define Classification: To group allowing for more meaningful observations & inferences.
Define Measurement: A comparison with a known standard.
Define Instrument: A tool used to extend the power of the human senses.
Describe Metric-System: An international System of Measurements.
Define Mass: Quantity of matter often described in grams.
Define Volume: Quantity of space a 3 dimensional object occupies.
Define Liter: Metric basic unit of liquid or gas.
Define Meter: Metric basic unit of length.
Define Gram: Metric basic unit of mass.
Define Percentage-Error. Difference between accepted value and measured value, divided by the accepted value, times 100.
Define Weight: A measure of the pull of gravity upon an object.
Define Density: The quantity of matter per given unit of space. (Mass/volume)
Define Phase-states; Solid, Liquid or Gas. Plasma regarding a star.
Four Degrees Celsius. Maximum density temperature of water. (1g/ml)
Solid State. Maximun Density of most materials occurs in this phase state.
Define Pressure: Force per given area. As it increases, density increases.
Temperature. A variable that will effect density. As it increases, density decreases. Thus hot air rises.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
